Unions, road freight employers reach deal.
Wage negotiations in the road freight sector had been successfully concluded, the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) said in an emailed statement on Monday (12 February 2007).
The four unions, led by Satawu, and the Road Freight Employers Association had agreed to sign a 9% increment plus an 8% increase on allowances, averting national strike action.
Satawu caters for cash-in-transit workers, road ferry trucks, furniture trucks and regular long-distance truck drivers.
Talks between the union and the road freight sector met a deadlock in November, and the two parties failed to strike a deal after further talks in January.
“Workers were poised to issue a 48-hour notice soon and the strike was to commence any time in mandatory 48 hour notice,” Satawu said on Monday.
There are 60 000 workers in the sector.
